Starting at Colyton Station
Our journey began at Colyton Station, where parking was free and the welcoming café provided the perfect place for a cup of tea before setting off. Soon after, we boarded the tram — a charming ride that trundles peacefully through the Axe Valley countryside towards Seaton.
Things to Do at Seaton Wetlands
Halfway along, we hopped off at the Seaton Wetlands Halt. If you love the outdoors, this is a must-visit. The Wetlands are a countryside haven made up of four distinct areas — Seaton Marshes, Black Hole Marsh, Colyford Common, and Stafford Marsh.
There are nearly 4km of level trails and boardwalks, perfect for wheelchairs, pushchairs, and bikes, and even an all-terrain mobility scooter available to hire. Along the way, you’ll discover:
During our visit, a local group was bird-ringing, and we were lucky enough to watch both a kingfisher and a woodpecker being carefully ringed. Out on the marshes, we spotted flocks of wading birds, including graceful godwits.
Continuing the Journey
After a couple of hours exploring, we rejoined the tram and continued towards Seaton. Along the way, we could have alighted at the Riverside Halt to enjoy views of the River Axe and explore the station where trams not in service are displayed. Instead, we chose to head straight into Seaton.
For families with children, Seaton offers the excellent Seaton Jurassic attraction. On this occasion, however, we had lingered too long in the Wetlands and simply didn’t have enough time to visit. Instead, we grabbed a quick bite to eat before catching the tram back to Colyton Station.
Ending the Day in Colyton
The day ended perfectly back in Colyton village, a pretty spot with traditional charm and plenty of places for refreshments.
